While Canadian schoolchildren learn about Laura Secord’s famous walk to warn the British army about the plans of the invading American forces during the War of 1812, much less is known about the woman herself. This article provides a historical overview of the Canadian heroine, and reflects on how her name and famous act have been adapted by authors, artists, government and business over the years to create a heroine that reflects their cause or interpretation of the past.
